Dipotassium glycyrrhizinate (DPG for short) is an active ingredient extracted from the root of the legume licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch.). Dipotassium glycyrrhizinate can inhibit melanin production. The experimental study selected the back skin of guinea pigs. Under UVB irradiation, the skin pretreated with 0.5% dipotassium glycyrrhizinate had a higher whiteness coefficient (L value) than the skin of the control group, and the effect was significant. The experimental results showed that dipotassium glycyrrhizinate has a significant effect on inhibiting melanin production and can be used to prevent skin pigmentation and melanin production after sun exposure. It is a potential skin whitening agent. It is mainly used in the pharmaceutical, food, beverage, and health care products industries. Dipotassium glycyrrhizinate can be used to improve the solubility of amphotericin B (AMB) and the bioavailability of the drug in suppositories. In the pharmaceutical field, dipotassium glycyrrhizinate can be used in eye drops and ointments; in the cosmetics industry, it can be used in sunscreen, freckle creams, skin care water, lotions, etc.; in the daily chemical industry, it can be used in toothpaste; in the food industry, it can be used in sports drinks as potassium supplements, sweeteners, preservatives, and flavoring agents.
