1,3-Dibromo-5,5-dimethylhydantoin

Dibromohydantoin is mainly used as an industrial brominating agent and bactericidal disinfectant. It is a very useful brominating agent. Compared with brominating agents such as N-bromoacetamide and N-bromosuccinimide, it has the advantages of high active bromine content, good storage stability, and economic use. It is widely used in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries for bromination of allyl and benzyl compounds and active aromatic rings, bromine or hydrogen bromide addition on double bonds, and selective oxidation of secondary alcohols. In addition, dibromohydantoin is also an efficient and safe bactericidal disinfectant with strong effects of killing fungi, bacteria and viruses, and has the effect of killing bad algae in water bodies. It can be used for the prevention and treatment of various diseases in aquaculture such as fish, shrimp, frogs, and turtles. It can also be used for swimming pool disinfection, fruit preservation, industrial circulating water algae removal, and daily life disinfection. For example, experts from the Beijing SARS Prevention and Control Working Group have proposed to spray, mop and wipe with dibromohydantoin solution with an effective bromine content of 500~1000mg/L for 10~15min to prevent SARS.
